ANDY GOLDSWORTHY- ENVIRONMENTAL ART
ACTIVITY:
- Explain how Goldsworthy’s work can be seen as a reaction against traditional forms and conventions of art?
- How does Goldsworthy use the elements of time in his work? How does this add meaning to the work?
Goldsworthy uses the elements of time through a lot of his artworks, as ephemeral is used this means that the art piece only lasts for a short period of time, because knowing nature itself will eventually decay overtime. - What systems, processes and materials does Goldsworthy explore and feature in his work?
The processes and materials Andy Goldsworthy uses to explore his artworks are all natural features, (for example the photo shown below) he uses a variety of different nature features such as, ice, sticks, leaves, stones and etc. Andy Goldsworthy had spoken that the decay of his artwork is implicit, which it means it creates the meaning that the works he makes are ephemeral.
- Why does Goldsworthy use circles, lines and spirals in his work?
Andy Goldsworthy uses many techniques in his artworks such as, circles, lines and spirals because he is reflecting off nature and the surrounded around him.
- Why is documentation important in Goldsworthy’s work?
Documentation is an important factor in Goldsworthy's works, as it proves the existence of the various artworks he has created, since the artwork will not stay in place forever.
- Do you think that Goldsworthy’s work is beautiful? Explain why or why not.
In my own opinion i believe that Goldsworthy's artworks are beautiful, as they are all made through nature as well as in nature surroundings.
- Do you think there is a political message in Goldsworthy’s work? If you do… what do you think it is?
Step 2: research
3 Goldsworthy sculptures artworks
Artwork one
Ice spiral- tree soul
created on the: 12 January 1987
materials used: Ice, and a tree trunks
concept/theme: conveys a growing spiral going through the stump, which could be relating to the growth of a tree, as they grow taller through time.
Artwork two
Dandelions and Hole
created on the: 28 April, 1987
Materials used: flowers: Dandelion’s and grass
concept/theme: The meaning, I which is trying to be conveyed is the small circle in the middle of the flowers could state the circle of life, and the flowers could represent the people all coming together. This artwork works well with it’s on space.

Artwork three
Rowan leaves and hole
created on the: 25th of October, 1987
materials used: Multiple colours of leaves – (red, orange and yellow)
concept/theme: representing the colours of the time of day as it goes in circles, or could also be representing fire elements.
step 3. Ideas/ selection
All 3 of ours idea, resulting in involving some type of ice hands into our artwork, we worked out having the hands either, literally on the branches on the tree, but it would have been too difficult to keep standing up and wouldn't be the safest idea to have. Another idea involving the hands would be creating multiple number of ice hands and creating some sort of barrier with them into a circle, as if it was surrounding the tree trunk, but it would have taken too much time to do in the time we were given to do the actual practical work. Towards the end we resulted in having the hands just stuck into the ground, as like the effect of awakening the dead from under the ground.
step 4. planning and production
Tools and materials used: gloves (used to mould into the hand form) water, dirt.
explain
Andy Goldsworthy's artworks explores the environment around him, meaning he uses the environment around him, creating it all with nature not with objects that are man made.
Me and my groups artwork is similar to what andy goldsworthy would create as it is, all created by natural non-man made objects (water-ice) something Goldsworthy himself would use.
describe
line, shape, form, space, value, texture
my group sculpture explores the six elements of visual arts of, line, shape, form, space, value, texture, as the space used (continue)
steps
during the night before, fill multiple gloves with water and freeze them into the freezer overnight.
step 1: gather all frozen gloves together and start unwrapping the glove off the ice.
step 2: once all ice hands are unwrapped, prepare to take the ice outside
step 3: place hands in chosen positions, set under the quad trees
step 4: when all hands are set into place, start documenting the artwork before the ice completely melts.
these steps were used in the process of setting up our environmental artwork.
State how you intend to document your sculpture:
We intend in documenting the artwork pieces before the ice hands are completely melted out of sight. documenting without the melting involved yet, will helps prove the idea of the assignment. Practically mainly during the process of setting up the artwork we are documenting, to show the process and actions involved and interactions involved. This will be seen through photographs.

Step 6: ICT/ DOCUMENTATION
STEP 8: EVALUATION
Evaluation of our Environmental Sculpture
The Sculpture.
1. In our environmental sculpture we used the following materials…
water, gloves, food such as, (Mandarins, almonds, strawberries)
2. We chose to use these materials because they symbolise the following ideas in the following ways…
we had chosen to use material use of food into the water to freeze, as we thought that it would be an interesting idea to create hands to symbolise the seasons that occur, (winter, spring, summer, autumn) each few hand represented a season. For example almonds were used for season of autumn.
3. We attached these materials together using…
water, in which it was then frozen overnight to be up and ready for the double period the next lesson.
4. We chose to use the site we did because…
this site we had chosen was the massive quad tree
5. This site enhanced our ideas because…
through doing this artwork we are showing that nature can be really interesting artworks, if you put meaning to them.
6. In our design we used the following elements of Visual Arts (line, shape, form, space, value, texture)…
In our design we used the elements of visual arts known as space, as well as shape.
7. These elements can be seen in the following features…
These elements of visual arts, included in my artwork are shown through the area (space) we have chosen to position our artwork, which is the main quad tree, we have used the space around the tree. As well as using the element of shape for the model of our artwork, which was seasonal ice hands.
8. Our final sculpture changed from our original design concept in the following ways…
In our final sculpture we had surrounded the frozen ice hands with water, to give off the effect that it was rising from the ground.
9. What areas of the sculpture do you think work the best? Why?
I believe that the areas of the sculpture that worked best was, when the fingers started falling off the hand figure, in which we were able to use to give more effect for the artwork.
10. If you had the opportunity to create the sculpture again, what areas of the sculpture would you attempt to improve? Why?
To be more careful whilst unwrapping the gloves off the actual ice figure, as we didn't realise how delicate the fingers were going to be, so next time would be better to do more delicately.
11. How do you think you could go around improving these features?
To go into more depth with the planning, we should have organised to do the hands earlier, and do it more carefully.
Documentation.
12. How do your photographs (and video) enhance the ideas you were exploring in your sculpture?
I believe that it would have been better if the sculpture was viewed in person, instead of looking at it through an image. The image doesn't really explores the happening of the ice.
13. In what ways could these be improved?
We should have left the sculpture up for more time, for more individuals to interact and visualise the artwork, instead of just taking stills of it and looking at it through an image.
Working collaboratively.
14. What were the challenges of working in a team?
Someone was not fully prepared and was unable to do their part, which affected the rest of the sculpture.
15. How could these be addressed (and eliminated) in the future?
Not give up such trusted jobs to do, if known that this would be happening or either just simply just not work with them again.
16. What were the positives of working in a team?
Everyone pitched in their own ideas, which then resulted in our final idea.
17. What strategies did you find helped promote positive working relationships and productivity when working collaboratively?
connecting with one another, like talking, communicating, sharing ideas, and working together to help complete the final process.
18. How would you approach a collaborative task in the future?
Be within groups of people you can actually trust and rely on, incase of individuals just sitting back and putting the work on the rest of them members of the group.
