What is the difference between Modern & Contemporary art?
Modern (traditional) and contemporary art, are not similarly the same, the difference between these two art practices is that modern and contemporary art are based from two different eras in the art movement. Although the main difference between the two is that it is not the style or way the artwork was created, but it is the age in, which the artwork was produced in.
• Modern artworks begun towards the beginning of the 1860's until the 1970's.
• Modern art is also known as a period in which a number of "-ism's" were created, such as: Dadaism, surrealism, expressionism and etc. This is all formed together, which creates modernism. In summary modern art was used t define "modernism."
• As for contemporary artworks this had followed on from the modern art practice in which meaning contemporary began from the 1970's and is still from this day is on going.
• Contemporary artists in past times have used a variety of techniques and materials, as well as using the new technologies used in this period such as, computers.
• Artists who are known as contemporary have mainly been through the past tormenting reality, which includes WW II and feminism. As they had grown up with these ideals and thoughts they are easily brought out to be different from artists who were in the modern era.
