Time
How does the time and context in which an artwork is displayed impact upon its relevance?
How does the period in which a piece is shown influence the meaning to the audience?
• Artworks often convey a message which can be seen when the artist displays the time period that the artwork is from. This message or meaning can change depending on the audience for example if the artwork was around the time of WWII, the audience may believe that the artwork comments on the war but a modern audience may connect it to a more current and modern event.
• The period an artwork is shown changes how well the audience can relate and identify the work. For example The Urinal by Marcel Duchamp would have been completely shocking and crazy to an early audience but today it is more acceptable.
• Over time artworks tend to become irrelevant, old and even boring however there are artworks such as the Mona Lisa which despite being created hundreds of years ago thousands of people travel to visit it each year. It is also interesting to note how people have appropriated this piece to make it more relevant to modern society. For example the work underneath were we see the modern stereotypical selfie pose in contrast to the traditional pose that women would do in the past.
• The audience’s ability to relate to a work can also determine how much they like the work and enjoy it.
• An art piece can be created from a completely different time period, and in a result to this many people such as the people from this current time period now can be interpreting the art piece into something, which is completely different to what the artist from that period might have had in mind, such as the original meaning that is trying to be conveyed in the artwork. But most of the time people gather what the real meaning of the artwork is.
• People can interpret their own meaning into an art piece, interpreting what they think the art piece means to them, or a possible guess to what the artist may be trying to display meaning of through the piece of art created.
• Time indicates the audience and due to having different audiences the message/meaning in a work changes. E.g if the artwork was created around the time of world war two, the audience during that era may believe that the piece comments on the war but a modern audience may connect it to a more current event.
